Italy's Wine Country:

Italy produced almost 1.4 billion gallons of wine in 2000 making it the second largest world producer. The country is subdivided into 20 regions that has more than 56.5 million people. Italy has a total of 116, 303 square miles.

Grapes are cultivated in every part of Italy. The entire country is a vineyard that has its own wines and characteristic identity. The nowrtwest section of Italy includes part of the Alps and Apennines and is divided inot six regions: Valle d'Aosta, Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy, Wmilia-Romagna and Tuscany. Northeastern Italy has three regions and is known as the Tre Venezie, the "three Venices". These regions are Veneto, Italy's largest DOC producer, Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

The central Italy area has six regions, Abruzzo, Latium, the Marches, Molise and Umbria. The southern portion of Italy claim Apulia, Calabria, Campania and the two islands of Sicily and Sardinia the cradles of ancient Italian enology.
