Sicily has more acres of grape vines in all of Italy
but only two percent is DOC. The popular red varieties are Nerello
Mascalese, Nero d'Avola and Perricone while the popular whites are
Cataratto Bianco, Damaschino, Grecianico, Inzolia and Verdello.
Many Sicilians dislike the DOC and the regional government
has set its own standards recognized by a "q" on the label
that indicates the wine has met the quality criteria of the region.
The DOCs include Etna, Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Malvasia delle Lipari
and Moscato di Pantelleria.
