Sardinia produces one DOCG, Vermentino di Gallura
that is produced from the Vermentino grape and up to five percent
of other authorized grapes in the region. although there are no aging
requirements, Vermentino di Gallura can achieve a superiore status
with an alcohol level of fourteen percent.
The Vermintino grape can be found growing in nearly
all the Mediterranean coastal regions from Spain to Liguria including
the islands of Sardinia and Corsica. Vermintino is of Spanish origin
and was first planted in Sardinia during the first decades of the
1900s. First planted in the Gallura district of Sardinia, an area
swept by the mistral, fierce winds from the Alps, it yields
exceptional character and is now planted throughout Sardinia.
