Calabria is primarily mountainous and hilly with
a vast differences of climate. The Tyrrhenian and Ionian Sea contribute
to wind-varying thermal conditions on the coastal lands and on the
other hand, inland areas have hot summers and cold winters; both areas
have rain in the summer and winter.
Calabria has four main winemaking areas that produce
eight DOC wines of which ninety-four percent are red or rose. The
famous DOC wine of Calabria is Ciro, produced from the Gaglioppo grape
and grown for thousands of years in the region.
