Boundaries:
The Marches and Tronto River to the North, Molise to the South, the
Appenines separates the region from Latium and Umbria to the West
and the Adriatic Sea forms the Eastern boundary.
Climate:
A varied climate that is cool and damp in the mountainous areas to
very hot and dry in the coastal plains area.
Soil:
Rocky, volcanic soil.
Grapes:
Reds; Dolcetto, Malbec, Merlot, Montepulciano, Pinot Nero
and Sangiovese. Whites; Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio,
Riesling Italica, Riesling Renano, Sylvaner Verde, Traminer Aromatico,
Tocai Friulano and Vetliner.
Abruzzo is the sixth largest wine producing region
in Italy. The region specializes in two DOC wines: the white Trebbiano
d'Abruzzo that allows blending with Malvasia, Cococciola and Passerina
and the red Montepulciano d'Abruzzo allows an addition of up to fifteen
percent Sangiovese with the Montepulciano grape. The Montepulcian
grape also produces a wine called Cerasuolo the is a cherry-colored
rose. The region produces much of its wine in bulk like the other
regions in southern Italy.
