The producers in The Right Bank rely mainly on the
early-ripening Merlot grapes. The main appellations in the northern
area of The Right Bank are Côtes de Blaye and Côtes de
Bourg. The most famed appellations of the district are situated in
a semi-circle around the town of Libourne and include Canon-Fronsac,
Fronsac, Lalande-de-Pomerol, Pomerol (pahm-er-OHL) and Saint-Émilion
(SANT ay-mee-lee-OHN).
The châteaux of Saint-Émilion received
a classification in 1954 and it has been updated three times since.
Thirteen Saint-Émilion châteaux are classified as Premier
Grand Cru Classé or “first great classified growth”
and two of these are additionally classified as "A" and
eleven as "B". Fifty-five Saint-Émilion châteaux
are classified as Grand Cru Classé or “great classified
growths”.
