Pauillac boasts three of the five red premiers crus
and almost one-third of all the crus classes in the Medoc. Outside
of the town of Pauillac down toward the Gironde River and northerly
toward St. Estephe chateaux and vineyards is the world-famous premiers
crus Latour, Lafite-Rothschild and Mouton-Rothschild with two deuxiemes
crus, Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande and Pichon-Longueville
Baron de Longueville.
The Chateau Latour has been growing grapes since
the 16th century; during the 18th century their wine was being sold
at London auction houses. Chateau Lafite-Rothschild is said by many
to be the best and most graceful wines in Bordeaux. Chateau Lafite-Rothschild
is the only chateau succeeding to elevate from premiers crus (1855
Bordeaux Classification) to grand premiers crus status in 1973 after
much lobbying by the late Baron Rothschild.
