Syrah or otherwise known as Shiraz are red wine grapes can produce a wine with peppery, spicy, black cherry, tar, leather and rosted nut flavors with a smooth, supple texture and smooth tannins. This wine can age for half a century.

Southern France blends it in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Languedoc-Roussillon. The grape is known as Shiraz in Australia where it was once a staple for blends but now high-quality wines are being produced from old vines in the Barossa Valley. The United States has seen a rise in quality and is a grape that is the easiest to grow and vinify for the exception of Cabernet.

Classic growing areas: Hermitage and Cote-Rotie of the Rhone Valley, France.

New growing areas: Penfolds Grange, Australia; United States.
