Red Grape Varieties:

Merlot grapes may be surpassing Cabernet Sauvignons as the preferred single-variety red wine grape. Merlot grapes have a thinner skin, lower tannin and acidity levels that produces a smoother, softer and fruitier wine that have potential to rival Cabernet Sauvignons and surpass them in a majority popular contest. Merlot is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Classic growing areas: Bordeaux; Langedoc-Roussillon, Pomerol and St. Emilion- France, Northern and Central Italy.

New growing areas: Southern France, California, Washington State, and New York, Maipo and Rapel in Chile.
